Dr. Michele bates-king
W&M Speech Professor
For the past 20 years at W&M, Dr. King has taught courses in public speaking, entertainment education, small group, nonverbal, and intercultural communication and continues to coach, train, and mentor students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Her passion is meeting students where they are and guiding them to be the best versions of themselves. She collaborates with colleagues across campus from the Business School, Entrepreneurship Center, and School of Education to the Graduate Center, Data Science, and the Reves Center for International Studies. She facilitates workshops to include the summer YALI fellows from the Mandela Washington flagship program of Young African Leaders Initiative as well as gifted STEM middle school students from all socioeconomic backgrounds on team building and perfecting their pitch.
Dr. King is a ludologist, advocate for esports, and active member of IBGSA (International Board Game Studies Association). For more than a decade, Dr. King has traveled the world from Brazil, France, and Belgium to Denmark and Germany to present her research on play, games, and gamification. Her favorite games include CodeNames, TriBond, Sagrada, Abalone, and Splendor. She thanks her biggest supporters Steve North, Andrew King, Jay and Marlene Bates for their willingness to embrace the spirit of play.
